Chapter 339: A Trap?
Chapter 339: A Trap?
After the Harvest Moon night, life became harder than he ever expected. Being Alpha of the pack no longer felt like honor. It felt like a burden he could not put down.
With each passing day, he lost count of his sad moments. The last time he laughed now felt like a memory from another life, from that unfortunate night.
Hiro rose from his bed and walked into the bathroom. He turned on the shower and leaned against the wall as warm water poured over his body. It should have been soothing, but it did nothing to calm him.
His mind was elsewhere, and his heart kept racing faster than usual. He should have thought about this day, about what it would mean to live in the same space as his mate without being able to go near her.
It was already torture that they had not been able to speak to her since that night. She stopped answering their calls and eventually blocked all their numbers.
Marcus had been furious that his daughter was going through heartbreak. To protect her, he banned them from coming to his house or ever seeing her again.
Now school had resumed, and Hiro knew for a fact that Angela was among the students who had checked in today.
His mind urged him to run to the west hostel and apologize again, to tell her how empty life had been without her. But he did not move.
Angela had made herself clear, and so had her father. Marcus had warned them that if they ever came near his daughter again, he would reveal everything to his brother.
Hiro and his brothers did not fear for themselves, but they feared for Angela. They did not want her uncle to come after her and blame her for Eliza’s death.
She had been innocent from the beginning, yet somehow she was the one who paid the price by losing her mates.
"Hiro..."
A familiar voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
Hiro sighed, dragging his hands down his face and then through his hair. He turned off the shower, reached for the towel on the hanger, and wrapped it around his waist.
"Alpha, are you alright in there?" Kael asked, his voice full of worry.
No answer came.
The bathroom door opened, and Hiro walked into the room, running a hand through his black hair. He should have grabbed another towel from the bathroom to dry it properly.
"Thank goodness you’re fine," his beta sighed in relief, a small smile forming on his face. He had been worried something might have happened in there. It was strange to even think that way, but his Alpha had not been himself since the Harvest Moon.
He barely left his room at home anymore. Most decisions were now passed through Kael before reaching the pack. Even the welcoming ceremony, a tradition meant to honor a new Alpha, had been canceled by Hiro.
It had left everyone talking, especially since other packs had held theirs without issue.
"What do you want from me?" Hiro asked, walking to the wardrobe. He pulled out a clean white towel and began drying his hair.
"I was worried about you. You resumed a week before the official reopening, yet you haven’t stepped out once."
"Can’t you see I want to be left alone?" Hiro stopped and turned to face his beta.
"You cannot continue to live like this," Kael said firmly, worry clear in his eyes. The once vibrant young Alpha had become a shadow of himself in less than two months. Each passing day, he looked more like a ghost. "You have to wake up and face the world, Alpha."
"Stop preaching, Kael," Hiro said as he sat on the sofa, both elbows resting on his knees. "I have other things to worry about. Eliza... before she died, she said something about my parents. She said she was sent to kill them... including me."
"I was surprised when I heard it too," Kael replied quietly.
Hiro nodded, his jaw tightening. He had blamed himself for that accident all his life, and just when he had finally begun to find peace, Eliza’s words shattered everything again. His parents had not simply died... they had been taken.
"So what are you going to do, Alpha?" Kael asked, his brows furrowed in confusion. Eliza had been the only one with a real clue, and now that she was dead, he wondered where they were even supposed to start from.
"I need to find out who was behind my parents’ accident. It is not going to be easy, but I have to start somewhere."
"Definitely," Kael added.
"Well, I have something to do," Hiro said, standing up and moving to the mirror stand. He began preparing himself to go out. "The principal asked me to check on the central house."
"Why?"
"They are yet to have a leader since Mr. Slade disappeared. Now I have to deal with them."
"Why you though?" Kael asked, still confused, unsure if this was another of Miss Valois’ games. "She could have easily appointed someone else to take the role."
"I have no idea, but I am going to obey her because she knows our secrets now," Hiro said, walking to the wardrobe and pulling out his clothes. A green polo shirt and black shorts. "She knows too much."
"Do you want me to take care of her?"
Hiro paused and turned to him in shock.
"Don’t be foolish. We are not killing my brother’s mother. I actually wish Renn had no connection to her. Things would have been much better."
"I wish we would be done with all our troubles and life would go back to being fun, like it used to be."
"Hopefully," Hiro nodded as he dressed quickly. He combed his hair and applied his fresh scent of perfume before leaving for the central house.
Outside the building, he felt as though he had just been released from prison. The cool breeze and warm sunlight touched his skin as he walked toward the parking lot.
Quickly, he got into his car with Kael, and they drove to the central house.
On arrival, the atmosphere felt different. His wolf stirred immediately, recognizing a familiar scent... Angela.
A cold shiver ran down his spine as he stepped out of the car and stood with his legs slightly apart. He closed his eyes, trying to focus, trying to trace where the scent was coming from.
"She is here," he whispered, while his wolf growled, urging him to go into the dormitory.
"Who? What are you saying?" Kael asked, confused. He looked at his Alpha, trying to confirm if he was hallucinating. "If you don’t feel good here, we could go back to our—"
He didn’t finish before Hiro whispered, "Angela."
Kael shook his head immediately in disagreement. "We have to leave now if she is here. You need to stay away and not hunt her down on the first day. Marcus will kill us..."
Hiro suddenly dashed toward the dormitory entrance, leaving him behind.
Kael buried his face in his palm, disappointed in his Alpha. He knew for a fact that making Hiro check into the central house had been a terrible idea.
