Chapter 288: Longing
Chapter 288: Longing
"Wh-what the fuck happened to her? Ember!" He pulled her into his arms but her body had already gone stiff. "Sofia, what happened?!" He demanded of his wife, who stepped quickly forward shaking her head.
"I don’t know, mi vida. I just came here and she told me to get you..." Sofia cried, her hand clasped over her mouth as she watched her husband grieve over the woman he had wanted to crown in her place.
"Call the doctor now!" he ordered his wife, but then belatedly remembered she was a useless fool and used the mind link to summon his men instead.
The doctor was brought in a few minutes later, along with Ember’s parents, who looked anxious and horrified at their daughter’s unmoving state as the doctor examined her.
"What did she eat today, and where did she go?" Javier demanded of Sofia while waiting for the doctor’s verdict, knowing he couldn’t afford to lose Ember at a time when everything had finally been going right for him. Her family were going to be a big help to him with their pack’s natural resources and without Ember, he could kiss goodbye to everything he planned to do for Silver to overrule everything his cousin had done and be a better Alpha than he had been.
"She went shopping and got into a fight with... with Laila and the Luna. The Luna grabbed her wrist, and Miss Ember said she didn’t feel well after that..." Sofia spoke through tears, wringing her hands nervously and avoiding eye contact as usual.
Javier dragged a frustrated hand through his hair as his eyes fell on the marks around Ember’s wrist, evidence of exactly what Sofia had described. The doctor was examining the area with so much attention that it irritated him, especially since the man hadn’t said a single word since arriving.
"Will she be fine?" Javier asked irritably, even though he had checked himself and found no breath in her, he still hoped for a miracle.
The doctor slowly straightened and let out a heavy sigh.
"I am sorry. I cannot save her. She died before you even called me."
"What do you mean she’s dead? She was fucking fine this morning!" Javier exploded, and Ember’s mother collapsed against her husband from the shock of the news of her daughter’s death.
The doctor, who knew Javier’s short temper and how dangerous he became in that kind of mood, quickly said, "It’s an unnatural cause of death. Her body is completely drained of water, and I detected traces of silver in her blood, which means she consumed something containing silver. That is why she coughed up blood before her death."
After Ember was declared dead, neither Javier nor her parents, for whom she had been their only daughter, could accept it. She had been perfectly fine that morning, and then suddenly she was dead.
Javier immediately ordered an investigation.
Leni confirmed Sofia’s account that Laila and Viola had been the last people Ember confronted before she began feeling unwell, and the doctor concluded that supernatural means had been used to completely drain the water from her body. On top of that, traces of silver had been found in her stomach, which meant whatever had happened to her had been done deliberately.
"You mean to tell me someone has used some powers to kill her and put her in that dry state?" Javier gritted out.
"That’s what it looks like." Replied the doctor.
"I will find who is responsible for this and sentence them to death for using witchcraft to kill my Luna to be!"
___
Viola was sitting in Zoe’s living room where Laila was still unconscious on the couch even after the wound in her side had healed, but the one in her chest was taking its time. She wasn’t sitting there to look after the she-wolf, she had already done her best and once Laila woke up she could find her own way home. She was sitting there because she was staring silently at the full moon through the glass wall of the living room.
Today was supposed to be the Moon Festival in the other packs, and the moon looked lovely, especially after all the building lights in Silver had been dimmed in its honor.
There were many sayings that praying to the Moon Goddess during the full moon could grant you what you desired in life, and so Viola, despite being nowhere near where the festival was taking place, offered her own quiet prayer from the house.
Many used this time to pray for their fated mates to find them or for the healing of their sick inner wolves, just as she suspected Zoe was doing in her room.
"Wherever Sebastian is right now moon goddess, I hope you protect him both emotionally and physically." She muttered, because it was still unknown to her where he was and she hadn’t heard from him yet. She hadn’t known she could miss him this much, hadn’t thought she was capable of missing his presence to the point she searched for him in everything around her and her heart constantly skipping a beat at any thoughts of him.
Her mind kept wandering to him in everything she did. If she didn’t think of his eyes or the way he teased her and smiled, she thought of his warm kisses and his touch, his mouth on her skin, his body warm against hers, inside her, and just from those thoughts alone Viola felt her body react, sparking to arousal and longing so deep it surprised her, because not once had she ever experienced anything like it with Evan or anyone else.
She let out a sigh and prayed to the moon goddess, as his mate, to guide him back home to her safe and sound, without any attempted assassination on his way, and that he shouldn’t come back to her with a bullet anywhere in his body.
While she prayed for Sebastian she also prayed for her sister to be found soon and for her protection. Viola didn’t forget to pray that she would stop experiencing strange things with water and could go back to being a normal werewolf with nothing in between, and nothing to worry about but her wolflessness.
What had happened with Ember in the fabric room was still fresh in her mind, and she couldn’t shake the strange sensation of power that had moved through her when she grabbed that wrist. It had been as though she could feel every trace of water and blood inside the she-wolf’s body just from holding her wrist, and that wasn’t something normal, yet she had no idea how she had done it.
