Chapter 393: Extremely Smart
Chapter 393: Extremely Smart
Susan Caldwell said in an even more coy tone, "I found a piece of Jade in a stone today. Weren’t you always talking about wanting to get Mom a special jade bracelet? The one I found would be perfect for it."
Mr. Caldwell said with a gratified expression, "That’s my thoughtful girl."
Susan Caldwell whined coquettishly, "Of course I am. I’m much more thoughtful than my brother. All he knows is his rough-and-tumble life; he’ll go half a year without even calling home. He finally got some leave a while ago, but instead of coming home, he ran off to Crestfall to have fun."
Mr. Caldwell chuckled. Susan continued, "Dad, wait for me to come back and give you the Jade, okay? We have to get Mom a bracelet carved with a really special design. It’s just..."
She seemed to hesitate at this point, and Mr. Caldwell asked, "Just what?"
Susan seemed to agonize over it for a long moment before finally saying softly, "It’s just that when I was buying the Jade, I ran into some anti-drug officers from border patrol. I was actually taken hostage by a drug dealer, so I called the police and used your name to get a squad sent over. But who would have known that by the time they arrived, the drug dealer had already been killed? Then the police mistook the other hostage for the dealer, and the whole thing even got the attention of the municipal police department..."
Ninety percent of her story was true, with only ten percent being false—enough to completely conceal her true intentions. This way, even if the matter was exposed later, she had already given her father a heads-up. She could just claim it was all a misunderstanding. By doing this, she could maintain the good impression her father had of her.
This was the contingency plan she had come up with on the way here. Even in such a tense and frantic state, she could still prioritize what needed to be dealt with immediately. It had to be said, she was a remarkable individual.
"What? You ran into a drug dealer? Are you okay?" Mr. Caldwell’s voice was filled with alarm.
Susan Caldwell quickly replied, "Dad, don’t worry, I’m fine. It’s just that I used your name to call the police, and the whole thing turned into a big mix-up. I was worried it would cause trouble for you, or even damage your reputation."
His voice softened. "As long as you’re all right, that’s all that matters. Don’t you worry about the rest of it; I’ll take care of it. Where’s Leo Wright? Let me have a word with him. What kind of job does he think he’s doing protecting you!"
"Dad, it wasn’t Leo Wright’s fault. He did his best, but it all happened so suddenly. I’m perfectly fine now, see? So please don’t punish him," Susan pleaded.
Mr. Caldwell sighed. "You’re just too soft-hearted, kiddo. Fine, we’ll drop it. It’s far too dangerous over there. I want you to come back tomorrow."
Susan agreed obediently. The two of them made a bit more small talk before hanging up.
After hanging up, an unconcealable look of triumph flashed in Susan’s eyes. Even though her plan had failed this time, she had quickly found a way to salvage the situation. With that phone call, even if the full story of what happened here got back to her father, he wouldn’t be angry with her. In fact, he would even help her clean up the mess.
’I’m an absolute genius!’
After Vera Xavier and Nathaniel Nathan returned to the hotel, she began to agonize over a new problem. ’Should I get him a separate room?’
She couldn’t even imagine what it would be like to share a room with him. More importantly, given his personality, Nathaniel would almost certainly hold her accountable for the day’s series of events.
She knew just how terrifying Nathaniel could be when he decided to settle a score!
