Chapter 561 - 553: Discussion
The real Brother Zong had been found, and with Nanny Wang keeping things in order, no one discussed it.
Gu Yifeng knew that he had to deal with Sister Ning’s situation first, so after dinner that evening, he brought it up, "Brother Zong is young and frail. I was thinking of bringing another child of his age into the mansion to keep him company. What do you think? This way, Brother Zong won’t feel too lonely."
Lin Youning felt a jolt in her heart but kept her expression unchanged, "That’s certainly a good idea. But where would we find such a child? Every child is a treasure in their mother’s heart. We can’t just bring someone else’s child here and separate them from their family."
"We could choose one from the nunnery; there are many unwanted children there," Gu Yifeng said casually.
Lin Youning nodded, resting her head on her elder brother’s chest, yet her heart was unsettled. She knew there must be news about Brother Zong; otherwise, her elder brother wouldn’t do such a thing. Thinking of Dong Boyun who came to the mansion today and Shanmoi who seemed hesitant to speak, and now with Brother Zong’s illness and the talk of adopting a child, Lin Youning felt these things might be connected.
The next day, Mrs. Liu Sr. and Liang Hui came to visit.
Lin Youning became even more certain, yet she didn’t reveal anything and just chatted with them. During the visit, Mrs. Liu Sr. and Liang Hui went to see the children, and their joyful expressions upon returning made it hard for Lin Youning to keep her composure.
After her grandmother and the others left, Lin Youning called Hailan over, "Go and bring Zong Ke here."
Hailan hesitated, "Miss, the young master is ill right now. The marquis doesn’t allow anyone to approach him. I want to see the young master too, but without the marquis’s permission, the guards won’t let anyone in."
"Is that so?" Lin Youning felt a bit downcast, "Then let’s not bother him. We’ll wait until he’s well; he’s too young to bear this."
Seeing her distress, Hailan had no other means. When the marquis returned in the evening, Hailan secretly reported the situation, and Gu Yifeng just nodded without saying much.
Only when he lay down with Sister Ning in the evening did he mention, "You’re almost through your confinement period. We’ll have a full-moon celebration for Brother Zong, and you can organize it personally."
Seeing her elder brother’s concern for Brother Zong, Lin Youning’s suspicions were further confirmed, making her happy, "Alright, I must think carefully about how to organize it. By the way, when will the adopted child arrive at the mansion?"
"He arrived a few days ago, but I thought I would wait a bit before letting you see him." Gu Yifeng realized that this one lie required many more to cover up, and for a moment, he considered telling Sister Ning the truth.
But after contemplating, he held back.
Lin Youning didn’t say much.
Another ten days passed, and finally, the confinement period was over.
Lin Youning first took a bath and ate some foods she couldn’t have during the last month, feeling full before putting her chopsticks down. Then she began dressing to see Brother Zong.
Gu Yifeng was by her side, "You haven’t left the room in a month. It’s cold outside; take your time."
He had someone bring a thick cloak to wrap her tightly, leaving only a small face exposed. Lin Youning glanced at her reflection in the bronze mirror; the plump face she had during pregnancy had slimmed down, making her face look even smaller.
Gu Yifeng saw her laughing softly to herself and couldn’t help but tap her nose, "What’s funny?"
In recent days, he could sense Sister Ning’s happiness.
"My face looks so small." Lin Youning stuck out her tongue and walked outside, "With Brother Zong’s full moon, grandmother and the others will surely come. Let’s go see Brother Zong first. Later, we’ll have a lot to do, and I also need to visit our aunt at the Marquis Mansion, whom I haven’t seen in a month."
"Take your time; we can visit the Marquis Mansion in the evening," Gu Yifeng supported her arm, afraid she’d fall.
Upon entering the room, Lin Youning warmed herself by the brazier before approaching the bed. On the bed lay two infants, but her eyes immediately fell on Brother Zong.
Feeling a slight pang in her nose, she carefully picked up Brother Zong. Gu Yifeng watched closely, noticing as she turned Brother Zong’s ear and saw the red mole behind it.
Gu Yifeng was stunned.
It turned out that Sister Ning always knew the Brother Zong they first found was an imposter; she just hadn’t said anything. Her recent happiness probably meant she’d picked up on something in his words, right?
Thinking this, Gu Yifeng felt an indescribable pain in his heart.
He wished he could embrace her tightly at that moment, even without saying anything.
When they first entered, Gu Yifeng had been worried she might pick up the wrong child, but now it was clear, and Gu Yifeng’s doubts were gone.
"Big brother, Brother Zong is so good." Sister Ning gently stroked Brother Zong’s little hand, "He’s so soft too."
Gu Yifeng came over and hugged the mother and child from behind, "Silly girl."
Lin Youning understood what her elder brother was implying.
Her elder brother must have realized that she always knew the recently recovered Brother Zong was a fake, right?
"It’s okay if I’m silly. I have so many people who care for me around," Sister Ning cooed at Brother Zong, then glanced at the bed, "I like this child too. Have you thought of a name for him, elder brother?"
"Brother Fu, perhaps. It’s his fortune to come to our family. What do you think?"
"Yes, let’s call him Brother Fu. He will be Brother Zong’s younger brother and the second young master of our mansion in the future." Lin Youning nodded firmly.
No matter what, Brother Fu is someone the family found for her, representing a part of their love.
And also because this child had been raised for a month after being abandoned, Lin Youning felt sympathy when she looked at him.
Things were simpler than Gu Yifeng thought. When Mrs. Liu Sr. and the others arrived, they exchanged glances with Gu Yifeng, and Gu Yifeng smiled and nodded. Mrs. Liu Sr. and the others were relieved, thinking Sister Ning was fooled, not knowing she was already aware of everything.
When Sister Ning proactively suggested raising the adopted child as the second young master, Mrs. Liu Sr. was further assured. Everything was resolved, and there was no more cause for worry.
Seeing this, Liang Hui also felt at ease. Looking at Brother Zong, she felt an indescribable envy. Her womb couldn’t bear children, and even though her father-in-law never mentioned it, Liang Hui felt it in her heart. Watching Sister Ning accept the adopted child as her own, she also hesitated, contemplating adopting one.
After dinner, once Mrs. Liu Sr. and the others left, Liang Hui stayed behind with Sister Ling. Since the incident, Sister Ling had become much quieter, standing docilely by the side.
