Chapter 283: Memory Enhancement Technique
Chapter 283: Memory Enhancement Technique
The interrogation room was a makeshift room, similar to those in police stations, with a soundproof wall in the middle. The interrogation could be observed through a one-way mirror.
Officer Tian Zhenggang could tell that it was originally a ward, as the oxygen supply pipes on the walls hadn’t been removed yet.
"As expected from a reclusive powerful family, it only took them three days to build this soundproof interrogation room." He sighed in front of the glass, "Must have cost a pretty penny, right?"
Yue Beifeng glanced at him, "Why do you say three days? Couldn’t it have been prepared a month or even a year ago?"
"Director Yue, you must be joking. There’s still the smell of glue lingering in the air." Tian Zhenggang wiped the edge of the mirror with his finger, "It’s sticky, definitely freshly applied."
"Then why not four days?"
Tian Zhenggang paused, then chuckled and shook his head, "Looks like you’re quite the stickler. I guessed because our chief said Beitian Academy called three days ago. They wanted to transfer the prisoner to Celestial Ridge District for interrogation. It’s as if it suddenly just popped into their heads. Since it was a sudden idea, the facilities should not have been prepared long in advance."
Yue Beifeng’s gaze changed slightly, "Your guess is pretty accurate."
"Just pure luck."
"With capable detectives like you in the police station, you still haven’t found any clues after two months?"
Tian Zhenggang sighed helplessly, "No luck. They were too secretive; even the prisoner doesn’t know when they got set up. We have no clue where to start our investigation. Besides, he’s not local; he’s an invisible presence in Jiang City, making it hard to track. I’m also curious, what method have you guys thought of that you think can break the case?"
"Honestly, none," Yue Beifeng said flatly.
Tian Zhenggang looked at him in surprise.
"But we’ve enlisted a master... a high-skilled civilian. He might have a way to solve the current problem."
"Really?" Tian Zhenggang was skeptical. He never believed in the ’master in the civilian’ theory. If someone had a unique skill, wouldn’t they use it to gain fame or money instead of keeping it hidden? Even the previously quiet ability users are absorbed by large organizations like the Dimensional Limit Mechanism. Let alone ’detective experts,’ a legitimate skill with promising prospects.
"Who knows?" Yue Beifeng didn’t answer directly, "Let’s just say that mysterious illness troubling the disease control center before was solved by him."
Tian Zhenggang immediately understood the implication.
He has the skills, undoubtedly a master, but it doesn’t mean he’s effective in investigations. The resolve of the previous issue earned him quite the reputation, so Beitian Academy is willing to call him again to give it a shot.
A doctor admired by Beitian Academy, yet not a part of it — that surprised Tian Zhenggang.
He learned of Beitian Academy’s existence only after becoming one of the police force’s key members.
They’re not a formal hospital, yet have many practicing doctors. They serve the rich and powerful while making significant contributions to research on various hard-to-treat diseases. Their medication is unaffordable for ordinary people, but relevant departments turn a blind eye. They’re also many medical schools’ collaborators, donating billions for research every year.
Without a doubt, joining Beitian Academy as a doctor would be the peak of one’s career, securing wealth and fame for life.
Is he truly a master indifferent to fame and wealth?
Besides, could a doctor have any detective insights? Based on his experience, Tian Zhenggang thought it might be a new form of truth serum or hypnosis. But neither of these methods would be more effective than the Great Memory Recovery Technique. At least he believed Zhang Zhiqui had already said all he could.
After about half an hour, another disciple from Beitian Academy opened the door and entered.
"Good morning, Officer Tian."
"Oh, Dr. You, you’re here." Tian Zhenggang felt relieved upon seeing him.
Although he knew Yue Beifeng’s cold demeanor wasn’t personal, being looked down upon by someone 2.1 meters tall was still intimidating. Venus’s You Chi was much easier to get along with, handsome and with a pleasant demeanor.
"Yes, we’ve brought the person. We’ll start right away." You Chi had brought a bag of Venison Coffee and thoughtfully distributed it to the two. "No matter what happens in the interrogation room later, please don’t be alarmed, Officer Tian. I assure you, the prisoner won’t die in Beitian Academy."
"Won’t... die in Beitian Academy?" Tian Zhenggang was taken aback, "Wait, if it’s the Great Memory Recovery Technique..."
"Rest assured, the person is a professional," You Chi smiled.
As they spoke, the door on the other side opened.
The three saw a young man with a baseball cap and mask enter the interrogation room and sit opposite the iron table. He had his back to the one-way mirror, so even without the mask, his facial features couldn’t be seen by those on the other side.
Tian Zhenggang frowned, realizing Beitian Academy was guarding against him.
"Who are you?" Zhang Zhiqui suspiciously stared at the "interrogator" before him, "Don’t do anything stupid; there are cameras here!"
"Don’t be afraid. I’m a law-abiding citizen and won’t do anything illegal." The speaker was naturally Chen Xuan, "By the way, we’ve actually met before. But it has been so long, and I didn’t show my face then, so I’m afraid you might have forgotten. That’s why I came to say hello."
Chen Xuan finished speaking and took off his mask, "So, do you remember me now?"
Zhang Zhiqui squinted and examined him for a moment, then snorted, "Who are you? I don’t know you!"
He might not dare to mess with Officer Tian, but that didn’t mean any random person could push him around.
"As expected... you don’t quite remember." He nonchalantly said, "No matter, we can reintroduce ourselves today."
"Are you crazy or something?"
Chen Xuan chuckled and snapped his fingers, "Look."
Zhang Zhiqui was about to insult him again when he suddenly felt an itch in his hands. He looked down and was immediately terrified—his handcuffed thumbs were melting! The skin was peeling back like molten wax, revealing red muscle tissue underneath. The fibers intertwined and fused his thumbs together!
Immense fear overtook Zhang Zhiqui: the person in front of him was an Ability User, and they were here to kill him!
"Help, murder!" He screamed, struggling to stand and escape.
But Chen Xuan merely pointed at him and uttered a word, "Freeze."
Zhang Zhiqui couldn’t move at all.
He found in utter horror that no matter how hard he tried, his body wouldn’t respond. He could only scream like a trapped animal.
"What’s happening?" Tian Zhenggang shot up. Though the sound couldn’t pass through the wall, he saw the prisoner’s expression as if he’d seen a ghost — eyes widened like lanterns. That fear didn’t seem fake. "Is there no communication device in the interrogation room?"
"Strange... there should be," You Chi replied unhurriedly, "Perhaps it malfunctioned again?"
Chen Xuan leaned forward, pinching the fused fingers between his thumb and index finger, "Calm down. It only itches and doesn’t hurt, unless you scream too loudly and annoy me—"
He gently rubbed them.
The exposed muscle instantly sent indescribable numbness and stinging pain through Zhang Zhiqui’s mind!
It’s not a nightmare; it was really happening!
But after the intense pain, Zhang Zhiqui dared not scream anymore. He held his breath and blinked hard, signaling he would comply.
At this moment, Tian Zhenggang sharply noted that the prisoner’s thumbs had suddenly turned bright red, like a lipstick with the cap off. Just a slight touch let blood trickle from the finger.
"Something’s wrong!" He immediately wanted to intervene and stop it.
However, a hand gripped his shoulder like a vise, making it impossible for Tian Zhenggang to move forward.
The one who stopped him was Yue Beifeng. "As mentioned before, you can only watch and can’t interfere with the interrogation."
"This isn’t right!" Tian Zhenggang protested, "Let go of me, you’re assaulting an officer!"
"Whether it’s right isn’t for you to decide," Yue Beifeng remained unmoved, "This interrogation is conducted by Beitian Academy—it’s an agreement between Dean Sun and your chief. Moreover, compared to the over a hundred people he killed, such minor wounds are nothing."
"You Chi!" Tian Zhenggang looked towards the other person.
This time, however, You Chi didn’t side with him. "I’m sorry, Officer Tian, but what I can assure you is that the prisoner won’t die in Beitian Academy before being tried in court."
